How To Maintain Your Fireplace – Top Tips

With the nights getting darker earlier and the temperature taking a nose dive, you will no doubt be reaching towards your fireplace to start your roaring, comforting fire. Whether you have a gas, electric or natural fuel burning fireplace you should do some maintenance on your chimney and your fireplace before you start using it regularly. These tips would also be recommended for anyone moving into a new home to ensure that the fireplace is in top condition and ready for use.

You should have a chimney inspection at least once a year

Even if you don’t use your chimney it will need inspecting, because although you aren’t using a fire it could still sustain internal and structural damage. For a fuel burning fireplace it’s recommended your chimney is inspected and cleaned quarterly when in use, for a gas burning fireplace a single clean/inspection each year should be fine. If you’re worried about your chimney at any point then make sure you call a professional in, they will be able to assess your chimney and provide it with a thorough sweep.

Gas fireplaces need as much attention as solid fuel fireplaces

It is a common misconception that a gas fireplace, because it produces no discernible fumes or ash, needs no cleaning or maintenance and is immediately ready to go. Gas fires however, tend to attract spiders whose nests can potentially block your burners. On top of this, there is always a by-product from any fire, and with a gas fire it is an invisible fume which needs to be drawn up through the chimney. If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned it could result in your living room filling with a harmful substance.

A cap on your chimney will keep out animals

Whether it’s for a nest or just by accident when rooting around, animals can often get stuck in your chimney. This can result in great stress for the animal, or, if they intentionally went to nest it would be harmful to them when you next light your fire. If the animal is stuck or dies then you will have a permanent blockage, this will reduce the efficiency of your chimney and send smoke, ash and debris into your house. It goes without saying that this is dangerous as well as messy. A cap will also prevent inclement weather affecting your chimney.

Have a good spring clean of your entire fireplace

No matter what style of fireplace you have it will need a “spring clean”. The window of your fireplace, if you have one, may be thick with grime, this needs to be scraped off in order to allow heat back out into the room. Similarly you don’t want dust, fluff or cobwebs from a gas fire to ensure nothing is blocked or faulty. Soot and ash may also collect in all the little crevices of a solid fuel fire so be sure to really get in there and remove any blockages and debris to give your winter fires the best chance of heating your room. After all, a quick clean will keep your fireplace looking brand new as well as improving its functionality. For the more enthusiastic cleaner, a buffering of any metal or shiny surfaces will give a nice gleam to the living room focal point.

There is a great deal you can do to improve both the look and functionality of your fireplace and chimney. Be sure to take extra care when you are doing so, and remember to keep children away from fires at all times.
