The importance of living sustainably is becoming a part of the lives of many people, with many of us looking at ways we can reduce our impact on the environment and live in a way that is better for the planet and for us. Recycling, cutting out meat, taking public transport and walking to work are some of the more common methods we are told to use for being ‘green’, but what about eco-friendly fireplaces? Let Enviro Flame talk you through them.
The Clean Air Strategy
In order to combat the growing concerns over air pollution and our impact on the environment, the government released The Clean Air Strategy in 2019. One of the more specific reasons for the introduction of The Clean Air Strategy was that many cities were in breach of the air quality limits in place. A focal point of the initiative was wood-burning stoves: the older versions of these stoves aren’t known for their fuel efficiency – they’re responsible for more than 35% of the country’s fine particulate matter, which is more than diesel vans and cars, as well as motorcycles.
What are some efficient fireplaces?
Modern wood-burning stoves are much, much more efficient than their predecessors. In fact, Stove Industry Alliance Ecodesign (SIA)-approved models of wood-burning stoves are capable of producing 80% fewer emissions than a 10-year old wood burning stove, and 90% fewer emissions than an open fire.
Since January 2022, all stoves manufactured after this time must be compliant with new eco-design regulations called ECO2022. These rules are good news for the planet, and will reduced particle pollution, carbon monoxide emissions and also boost the energy efficiency of stoves.
Bio-ethanol fireplaces
Bio-ethanol fireplaces burn fuels made of fermented vegetable matter, which is massively more eco-friendly than fossil fuels. The fuel burns without odour, too, so there’s no chance of your floor being littered with ash or debris, and they don’t require a chimney to work, so they’re suitable for any kind of home.
Gas fires
Gas fires have been popular for years, and they are also an efficient alternative to wood-burning stoves. Thanks to advances in design and technology, your gas fireplace can be made complete with a log-burning effect, so you can get the traditional look of a wood-burning stove without the extra consumption that comes with it.
Electric fires
Another tried and tested fireplace type that has benefitted from advancements in design over recent years. Thanks to the innovation of LEDs and their widespread popularity, electric fireplaces are now a lot more efficient than they used to be, and with design options like real-looking flames and log baskets, your electric fireplace can look just like a log burner.
How can I make my fireplace more eco-friendly?
One way of making your fireplace more efficient is to change the fuel that you use. Fuels like dry/cured wood are good for reducing emissions, as are smokeless fuels. Using wood that hasn’t been properly dried, or using coal to fuel your fireplace is commonplace but it is not efficient, so try and find a more sustainable alternative where possible.
