What is a chimney inspection (and why do I need one)?

A chimney inspection is a vital part of chimney ownership and an important part of being a responsible home owner.

Spotting problems as and when they arise will reduce the likelihood of chimney fires, structural deterioration and harmful gas leaks from developing and worsening.

In this article, we’ll take you through what an inspection is, what’s involved, how often you need one and how you go about arranging it.

What is a chimney inspection?

A chimney inspection is an evaluation of your chimney, carried out by a professional. The inspection is designed to assess the condition of your chimney and identify any current or developing problems.

Chimney inspections come in several levels, which include different checks and services, most often including a chimney sweep service using traditional brush and rods or a power sweep, so make sure you’re clear on what level of service you can expect when you book.

Why do you need a chimney inspection?

A chimney inspection is a vital opportunity for your chimney to be assessed by a professional who can pick up on problems that you won’t be able to identify yourself. If you neglect to get a chimney inspection, issues can be overlooked which could then result in the increased risk of a chimney fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Problems that can develop include cracks, damage, pests, creosote build-up, blockages, and many other issues. A professional will be able to then also advise on the severity of the problem along with what needs to be done to solve it, which may include chimney sweeping.

What happens in a chimney inspection?

A chimney inspection is available in three different levels depending on the needs of your home or business.

Generally, the offerings for each level are the following:

  • Level One – The least thorough and least invasive inspection. The reachable areas of your chimney will be fully swept and assessed to determine if there is a deeper problem potentially unfolding. Specialist equipment won’t usually be used, other than the sweep sticks and chimney sock. The result of this inspection will determine if you require the next level of chimney inspection if required.
  • Level Two – This inspection will include everything present in level one, but will go a little deeper and be more thorough. Less accessible areas will be examined, and may even include the roof or attic. Cameras may even be used to assess the condition even more thoroughly, and specialist equipment will be used too. This type of inspection is commonly done during the house buying process.
  • Level Three – An in-depth inspection of the chimney and associated areas — usually carried out if there has been a major incident or if extensive damage is expected. As well as including everything in the previous two levels, it will likely involve deconstruction of certain areas of the chimney. The chimney will be heated and an integrity test carried out whilst covering the top of the chimney pot and opening of the fireplace, to ensure the smoke does not leak from the flue.  If it does, remedial measures will be discussed.

At each level of inspection, a chimney sweep will be offered or recommended to you, and this can often be done at the time of inspection.

How often should you have a chimney inspected?

It’s generally recommended to have a chimney inspection and sweep at least once a year for gas, LPG and Oil and twice a year for solid fuel. This will need to be done more regularly if you have a coal or wood burner used on a daily basis, so ask for advice on regularity.

If a major incident has occurred, such as a chimney fire, an inspection will also need to be conducted to assess the damage.
